Regional Visitors Center says Memorial Day Weekend marks unofficial start to Summer in Southeast Texas

More than 42 million Americans are expected to travel this weekend, according to AAA.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to summer, and more than 42 million Americans are expected to hit the road this weekend, according to AAA.

For those looking to travel to our area, or even families planning a "stay-cation", Southeast Texas has plenty to offer. You will not have to look far for ideas on how to spend your holiday weekend.

The Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitors Center, located just off I-10, will be able to point you in the right direction.

"We have so much to offer here, you can go and eat cajun food, you can go fishing, you can go out to the beach, you can go to the Big Thicket, you can go to our great museums, you can go see an alligator, we are very diverse and there's something for everyone," said Kathi Hughes, Ben J. Rogers Visitor Center Director.

Hughes tells 12News that many people do not realize that the area is a destination.

"We have seen well over a hundred countries here in the visitors center...I like to say we are where country and Cajun connect."

If you call Southeast Texas home, Hughes encourages you to try and enjoy what is in your own backyard.

"People want to get outside and experience nature ...I encourage everyone to do that, do one thing that you've never done before."
