Hardin County fire captain burned after tank complex fire discharged from hospital

Hardin County fire captain Chad Pierce is going home and expects to go back to work in a few weeks.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A Hardin County fire captain burned by 'boiling hot oil and water' is being released from the hospital after helping crews fight a fire on October 4.

Captain Chad Pierce told 12News he'll be going home after being treated for second-degree burns to his legs and a burn to his arm.

Pierce was called to help Jefferson County first responders with a tank complex fire south of China, when he fell into a ditch full of hot oil and water.

He told 12News it was up to his waist. Despite his injuries, he said he's ready to return to work.

"I'm ready to get back on the truck and keep serving my community," Pierce previously told 12News. "That's what I signed up for and that's what I'm going to retire doing."

He will finish his recovery at home, and expects to return to work after a few weeks.
