One cyclist is dead and two others are in Texas-area hospitals in serious condition.

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas — A 51-year-old man is dead after six bicyclists traveling cross-country were struck by a car in Liberty County Saturday morning, according to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

A preliminary investigation into the crash suggests a 2014 Ford Escape was traveling east on FM 787 around 11 a.m. when the driver failed to control his speed and struck three bicyclists.

Two bicyclists were airlifted to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont and one victim was transported to Kingwood Hospital.

Bicyclist Kent Joshua Wospeka, 51, of South Hamilton, Massachusetts, was later pronounced dead. Two other bicyclists are in Texas-area hospitals in serious condition.

The caravan of bicyclists was heading east on the highway for an annual ride from San Diego, California to San Augustine, Florida.

The driver of the Ford Escape stayed on the scene after the crash, according to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office. It is unclear if any arrests have been made.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Texas Department of Public Safety with this ongoing investigation.
