Beaumont ISD parent shares thoughts on potential school walkout

A West Brook mother thinks she would support her daughter if she chooses to participate in a high school walkout. Walkouts are being organized after the Florida high school shooting.

Students and organizations are planning nationwide school walkouts to protest gun laws after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

At least one school district in Southeast Texas says they will discipline students choosing to participate.

Despite the discipline, Halie Smith shared her thoughts on how would she react if her daughter walked out of West Brook High School.

"I don't think I would have any negative feelings towards it, I would have a conversation with her to know what her reason for participating in it is," Smith said.

Beaumont ISD says they have not sponsored any walk out.

A district spokesperson says that students who do not follow expectations outlined in the student code of conduct will be disciplined.

If students plan to walk out or stay in class, Smith hopes her daughter understands the meaning of her actions.

"I think that at this age, they only have so many ways to express themselves and be heard, so I think I'd be supportive of her if she made that decision. But again, as long as there's a conversation that goes with it,” Smith said.

Beaumont ISD also released a statement in wake of the Florida shooting.

12News contacted other school districts including Port Arthur ISD, Port Neches-Groves ISD, and West Orange-Cove CISD to ask if they would punish their students over a walk out. Those districts have not returned our calls.
