BEVIL OAKS, Texas — Flood waters are still high and it is not safe for Bevil Oaks residents to return to their homes, officials said Sunday morning.

The City of Bevil Oaks has been coordinating with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department and their emergency management team to assess flooded streets and determining if automobile traffic would cause wakes that would cause more damage to flooded homes.

"I am told that there are still streets covered with two feet of water and are not safely passable without causing a wake," Mayor Becky Ford said in a Facebook post.

The Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management will determine once the water recedes to a safe level and traffic will not create further damage, Ford said.

"This decision is theirs exclusively and not the decision of the Mayor and City Council," she said in the post. "During incidents of this nature, they are completely in charge, and it is their responsibility to use their training and expertise to do everything possible to protect our property and save lives."

Ford encouraged residents to be patient as officials assess the situation.

"(We) appreciate that they are willing to give countless hours of their personal time for our benefit," she said. "We will keep you updated as information becomes available."
