A Jasper County deputy is being credited with saving her life after hearing her screams at about 11 a.m. Tuesday morning while he was at his home.

The deputy, Daniel Coons, ran towards the shouting and found Hartford on the ground being attacked by two dogs near the 300 block of County Road 110A, according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

Coons shot one of the dogs and, when the other dog charged at him, he shot the other dog. Both of the dogs were killed.

The deputy was able to apply a tourniquet to Hartford's right arm and bandage her leg.

She was taken by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital and then flown to a Houston hospital, according to the sheriff's office.
