Community mourns passing of Jasper officer killed in Friday wreck

Sherer served on the police force but was also a beloved school resource officer.

JASPER, Texas — The Jasper community is heartbroken following the death of Jasper Police officer Christopher Sherer following a Friday afternoon wreck.

Sherer served on the police force but was also a beloved School Resource Officer.

Friends and loved ones said Sherer always greeted students with a smile and the only thing he loved more than protecting and serving the Jasper community, was his wife and and two daughters.

"He's leaving his daughters behind those were his legacy," said longtime friend Kandi Davis.

Sherer was a family man, and Davis says that his family was the center of his universe.

"He loved his girls. His oldest daughter is a member of our Dazzler team here. I don't think there was a performance he missed that she did. He absolutely adored his family. He thought the world of his wife, you know, he was their biggest support system," said Davis.

Sherer dedicated nearly 30 years of his life to law enforcement, working at the Tyler County and Jasper County Sheriff's Offices before joining the Jasper Police Department.

For the past year and a half, he served as a resource officer for Jasper ISD.

"He came to us and asked for that job. He was wanting to be a school resource officer and a lot of it had to do with the fact that his daughter was also in that school," said Mike Poindexter, Interim Chief of the Jasper Police Department.

Poindexter said that Sherer will be be hard to replace.

"It's going to be a tough (position) to fill knowing the type of person Chris was," said Poindexter.

Whether it was at the school, a sporting event or even as a crossing guard Sherer was there to protect the kids of Parnell Elementary.

He was also known to to brighten kids day while greeting them and playing music at morning drop off.

"He was just such a friend of those kids. He was a father figure to many. He would do anything for the students, for the staff. The staff and students are just heart broken today," said Jasper ISD Superintendent, John Seybold.
