Murder charge dropped against Beaumont man who police said strangled another man with his bare hands in 2017

Beaumont Police charged Lewis with first-degree murder in 2017 for strangulating George Erwin, 63. His death was ruled homicide by asphyxia due to manual strangulation.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A murder charge was dropped this morning against a 62-year-old Beaumont man who Beaumont police said killed a man with his bare hands in the city’s north end two years ago. 

Robert Lewis was sentenced to five years in prison for tampering with evidence.

He entered a guilty plea to the tampering charge Monday morning, April 22 before Judge Raquel West in the 252nd District Court.

The murder charge against Lewis was dismissed.

Beaumont Police charged Lewis with first-degree murder in 2017 for strangulating George Erwin, 63.

Lewis died at the Grand Pine Apartments in the 2800 block of Pine Street on August 11, 2017.  His death was ruled homicide by asphyxia due to manual strangulation.
