Man accused of fatally shooting man in back at Nederland apartment held on $250K bond

Bond was set by Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Kenneth W. Dollinger

NEDERLAND, Texas — A man Nederland Police were searching for in connection with a fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon turned himself in at the police station Thursday morning.

Jonathan Loya, 20, arrived at the Nederland Police station around 8 a.m. according to Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter.  Detectives questioned him, then charged him with one count of murder.  Bond was set at $250,000.

When Nederland Police Officers arrived at the Briarcliff Apartments in the 1300 block of North Twin City Highway Wednesday afternoon they found the body of Joshua Caleb Miller, 34, with a gunshot wound to his back according to Porter.

"It's not a place where we normally have homicides,"Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter said. We had one last year. Before that, I think it has been about five years since we had a homicide. Just the fact that we had one in the Mid County is a huge deal."

Nederland police are still seeking two other male suspects they believe may be involved in the death of Miller.

Witnesses told investigators three men had an argument at the complex with another man, and at least one gunshot followed according to Chief Porter.

"We're out doing everything we can to get this cleared up quick as we can," Porter said. We want jump to any conclusions.  We will make sure that we'll make sure that we have all of our ducks in a row."

Witnesses told police two of the men left on foot, and one man left in a truck.
