Armed man found after search, shelter-in-place issued for Kountze area

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies were doing a welfare check for a veteran who reportedly shot his dog when he shot at deputies three or four times.

KOUNTZE, Texas — Authorities issued a shelter-in-place for parts of Kountze Saturday night during a search for an armed shooter.

Law enforcement found the man and took him into custody around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, June 23, Hardin County Emergency Management said in a Facebook post.

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies were doing a welfare check for a veteran who reportedly shot his dog when the man shot at deputies three or four times around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, officials said.

Relatives told officers he had more than one rifle. The veteran was reported to be possibly suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The suspect then drove off into Hardin County, officials said. After he crashed near a Methodist church in Kountze, he shot at officers again and abandoned the car, officials said. Officers said they believed he was still armed with a rifle when he took off running into the woods after the crash.

Authorities said the suspect is "armed and dangerous."

The search for him was around Kountze Intermediate School near Highway 69 and 326. Several agencies responded to the scene.

No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
