Tsunami test warning worries residents in Orange, Beaumont, Port Neches & Vidor, 'It's just scary'

The notification said there was a severe weather alert and a Tsunami warning will be in affect for the area until about 8:30 Tuesday morning, it then sourced the United States National Weather Service.

Many of you received a tsunami warning alert on your cellphones Tuesday morning, but when you opened the notification it was simply a test, this creating a wave of concerns across social media platforms.

The notification said there was a severe weather alert and a Tsunami warning will be in affect for the area until about 8:30 Tuesday morning, it then sourced the United States National Weather Service.

Several people in this area tell 12News that waking up to this notification was quite alarming.

"I saw the notification on my weather app so I quickly told my boyfriend that there was a tsunami warning," says Brenda Kreiger.

For her and her boyfriend Douglas Byrd, it was a few minutes of panic.

"It's just scary, there could have been mass pandemonium," Kreiger says.

It wasn't until you opened the notification that it stated the alert was simply a test.

The notification read:

"This message is for test purposes only. This is a test to determine transmission times involved in the dissemination of tsunami information."

The National Weather Service says there is no cause for an alarm on the Gulf Coast.

"Kind of makes me feel like some people need more training, one person makes a mistake and so many people get misinformation," Byrd says.

"It's just very scary, these weather apps and systems need to be more responsible," Kreiger concludes.
