LIST: Southeast Texas school closures ahead of Hurricane Laura

Several school districts and colleges cancelled classes this week due to uncertain storm trajectories.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A number of Southeast Texas school districts have announced cancellations for the upcoming week as Southeast Texas braces for possible impacts from two systems that may be in the Gulf at the same time. 

Here are the schools who have announced closures ahead of possible bad weather:

  • Anahuac ISD will be closed Tuesday through Friday, August 25 - 28. This includes all school activities.
  • Beaumont ISD schools are closing at 1 p.m. Monday, August 24 for the rest of the week. All district events, including meal distributions will be suspended until virtual instruction resumes.
  • Beaumont Classical Academy is closing for the remainder of the week. It will reopen on Monday, August 31 
  • Bob Hope Elementary start date pushed back to August 31. (It was set for August 24) 
  • Bob Hope School Middle School will be postponed from August 31, 2020 to September 8, 2020.
  • BHS High School will start on September 8, 2020. 
  • Bridge City ISD will be closed from August 24-August 28.
  • Burkeville ISD is closed Tuesday, August 25 through Friday, August 28 
  • Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Beaumont will close Tuesday, August 25 – Friday, August 28.
  • Christian Community School Orange, closed August 24 - 28.
  • Deweyville ISD: The campus will be closed August 24 through August 28. Students will participate in remote learning only this week. 
  • East Chambers ISD "will transition to totally virtual learning" starting on Tuesday, August 25. "As soon as the threat has passed, and we are able to reopen for in-person face to fave instruction, we will. Stay tuned for regular updates."
  • Kountze ISD students will be online only with Google Classroom, no live Zoom instruction Tuesday, August 25 and the district will be closed Wednesday, August 26 to Friday, August 28. 
  • Lamar Institute of Technology will be closed on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, August 25-27 
  • Lamar State College Port Arthur cancelled face-to-face classes starting Tuesday, August 25 to allow students to prepare for the impact of Tropical Storms Marco and Laura. 
  • Lamar State College Orange is closing at 12:30 p.m. Monday, August 24. This closure includes face-to-face, online, hybrid, virtual-on-a-schedule, and dual credit classes, campus officials said. The college plans to resume classes Monday, August 31.
  • Lamar University is suspending in-person residential classes starting on Tuesday. The campus itself will close August 25 at noon. Online courses will continue to meet. The closure will be in place until Sunday afternoon.
  • Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD will be closed from August 24-28. 
  • Nederland ISD is closing at 1 p.m. Monday, August 24 through Friday, August 28. 
  • Orangefield ISD will be closed from August 24-August 28.
  • Port Arthur ISD will be closed from Tuesday, August 25 through Friday, August 28 and plans to reopen Monday, August 31.
  • Port Neches-Groves ISD cancelled classes from August 24-August 28.
  • Silsbee ISD will be closed Tuesday, August 25 through Friday, August 28. The start of school will be delayed until September 1. 
  • West Orange-Cove CISD will be closed from August 24-August 28.  
  • Vidor ISD will be closed from August 24-August 28.  
  • Legacy Christian Academy will be closed from August 24-August 28.  
  • Sabine Pass ISD will be closed from August 24-August 28.
