Wreck between small car, 18-wheeler claims 1 life in Orange County Tuesday

ORANGE, Texas — A fatal wreck involving a small car and an 18-wheeler has closed down Highway 62 in Orange County.

The wreck was reported shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday along Highway 62 at Tulane Road in Orange County.

The driver of a 2009 Smart Car was heading north on Highway 62 when she crossed the center line and hit a southbound 18-wheeler head on, officials say. The reason is unknown at this time. The collision remains under investigation, according to a report from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The driver of the Smart Car was killed in the impact. She has been identified as 57-year-old Kitty Ledger of Sulphur, Louisiana.

The 18-wheeler was not carrying any cargo because it had just unloaded, officials say. No citations were given out. The driver of the 18-wheeler has been identified as a 62-year-old man from Orange. He was not injured, according to TxDOT.
