Two taken to hospital after pickup rear-ends dump truck on Texas 73 in west Jefferson County

Traffic maps showed traffic in the west bound lanes of Texas 73 backed up for about 1.5 miles.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas — A multiple vehicle wreck on Texas 73 west of Taylor Bayou shut down eastbound lanes around 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. 

A pickup truck hit the rear of a large multi-axle dump truck in the wreck according to DPS. 

The driver of the dump truck, Ferrer Perez Maidley of Beaumont, was taken to a local hospital.

The pickup truck driver, 45-year-old Michael Hughes of Beaumont was also taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

From a Texas Department of Public Safety news release...

At approximately 1:00p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a multiple vehicle crash on SH 73, near Sabine Consolidated, in Jefferson County.

The preliminary DPS crash investigation indicates that a dump truck was traveling eastbound on SH 73 when it was rear-ended by a 2020 Toyota pickup truck.

The driver of the dump truck, Ferrer Perez Maidley of Beaumont, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Toyota, 45-year-old Michael Hughes of Beaumont, was transported to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries.

At this time, there are no additional details to be released.
