Jasper County deputy attacked, choked during traffic stop

After a struggle, the deputy eventually gained control and arrested the driver.

JASPER COUNTY, Texas — A 25-year-old Magnolia Springs man is behind bars after assaulting and choking a Jasper County deputy last week.

Kenneth Woods, 25, was arrested on Friday, November 11, 2022, after attacking a deputy following a brief chase along Texas Highway 96.

Deputies initially pulled over a Volkswagen Beetle, driven by Woods, for a traffic violation according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

When Woods stopped at the intersection of Highway 96 and FM 1005, in Jasper, a man got of the passenger side of the car with his hands up the release said.

The Beetle then took off along Highway 96 with deputies following but was "disabled" a not long after.

Woods then got out and ran into a nearby wooded area along Highway 96.

A deputy chased him into the woods while commanding him to show his hands and surrender the release said.

Woods then charged the deputy, attacking him and at one point choking him according to the release.

As the struggle continued the deputy eventually gained control of Woods and arrested him.

Once in custody, deputies found that Woods was possession of some methamphetamine the release said.

Woods was arrested on some outstanding warrants and later charged with three felony charges.

The charges include assault on a peace officer, a second-degree felony, evading arrest/detention with a vehicle, a third-degree felony and possession of a controlled substance of more than one but less than four grams, a third-degree felony.

He is currently being held in the Jasper County jail on bonds totaling $250,000 according to a jailer.
