REHAB grant program helps 85 to 100 homeowners with up to $25K for home repairs

A Port Arthur man's home was damaged for the third time after a tree fell on his home during Thursday's storm.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Three weeks after an EF-2 tornado slammed into Port Arthur, Southeast Texans continue to endure severe weather.

A Port Arthur man is hoping to get help with repairs after a second tree damaged parts of his property following Thursday's thunderstorms.

Jake Johnson, of Port Arthur, applied for the Jefferson County Rescue & Restore Program grant through Legacy Community Development Corp last year.

He hope that the grant will help cover the series of new damages his home has suffered.

"It just sounded [like a] like a real cracking noise, like a tree cracking," said Johnson.

Johnson's home was damaged more than twice. He had to rebuild and make repairs each time.

"I'm the one to have to clean it up at some point in time, you know this is my property and I love my home and I just want to be able to do the right thing with my land and my property and live a prosperous life," he said.

His home was damaged for the third time after his neighbor's tree fell. The grant he applied to last year could possibly help with repairs.

"I would rather for them to go in and fix the things that were on the inside, in the windows and the porch and my back porch which is my studio and I would be satisfied," he said.

Legacy Community Development Corp is a Port Arthur- based nonprofit. They provide several assistance programs, including the Jefferson County Rescue & Restore Program, known as REHAB.

The REHAB grant helps low-income elderly, disabled and seniors repair their homes.

"Most of the people are getting new roofs, some people are getting flooring, bathroom repairs, kitchen repairs," said housing coordinator Jo Ann Patillo.

The REHAB grant program is helping 85 to 100 homeowners by providing up to $25,000 for home repairs or replacements, according to Patillo.

"I tell people all the time it's not an HGTV moment, but it's a moment where we can make the necessary repairs," she said.

With more storm-related damages, representatives are trying to get caught up on applications.

"It's just been too much on my budget, so I would always reflect to some type of assistance that's in the neighborhood," said Johnson. "I'm just someone that's going through a traumatizing situation and is trying to rectify."

If any residents are in need of assistance, they should contact the Legacy Community Development Corp.

New applicants will be added to a wait list until Jefferson County Commissioners Court can provide more funds.
