PORT NECHES, Texas — After a young man was hit by a speeding truck while taking out trash for his fiancée's grandmother, he and his family's life were changed forever.
Now he needs financial support to recover, and his family is telling people they need to pump the brakes when they are in a residential area.
"People, please slow down. Please it could be your grandchild," said Patricia Bailey
Last Sunday evening at around 6:30 p.m. 26-year-old Roger Sims decided to take out the trash for 80-year-old family member Patricia Bailey.
"I went outside and he was following me, and I said do you wanna help Maw-maw take out the garbage?" said Bailey.
Sims gladly took the bag and started to walk to the end of the driveway, and then disaster struck.
"So he took the garbage from me, walked behind me. I went to pick up another little garbage that rolls, and I heard him get hit," said Bailey.
Sims was suddenly hit by a speeding white pickup truck.
"I could see a truck flying off. I could tell it was white two door. I could see all the debris," said Bailey.
Bailey is still shaken up after seeing what happened to Sims.
"(I was) praying, asking God to help him. Could've been me. That wasn't the important thing, the important thing was him, but I still worry, feel bad because I asked him," said Bailey.
Sims Broke his jaw in two places, injured his leg, spine and more. Now his family is asking the community for donations to help with his recovery.
"The Money will go to help them with all their needs. Like for instance, he's paid for his own stuff so far. Now we know he's had hospitalization, but we haven't even been able to ask if there's a pharmacy card. You know, one of his prescriptions was over $200," said Bailey.
The community has already came together once to help search for the driver of the truck who hit Sims and fled the scene.
"Port Neches is a great little town. I am grateful that everyone has pulled together. They got pictures from the bank. The neighbor got the time stamp. So they knew what type of vehicle it was," said Bailey.
This Sunday was Sims birthday, and he's happy to be alive to see another.
"He turned 26. God is good. He's our miracle kid," said Bailey.
