NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — Newton County Constable Pct. 4 Howard Wonders has deemed a sergeant in his office 'Hero of the Month' after she saved a toddler who was running across a busy street in Houston.

Sergeant Lisa Stepney of the Newton County Pct. 4 Constable's office was driving down Scott Street on December 7 when she spotted the child, according to Constable Wonders' Facebook post.

Sgt. Stepney was able to block traffic and bring the child back to her vehicle. Soon after, she spotted the girl's parents frantically searching for her near the roadway.

After flagging the couple down, Sgt. Stepney was able to confirm they were the toddler's parents. They explained the child has learned how to unlock and open their car door, and that this is the second time she has gotten out of their vehicle.

While speaking with the parents, Sgt. Stepney told the couple they needed to find a way to avoid a situation like this in the future. The parents called her a hero and thanked her for saving their child.

Constable Wonders finished his post by thanking Sgt. Stepney for her quick actions.
