Nederland set to begin $10M sewer project to fix damaged, aging pipes

According to Nederland City Manager Christopher Duque, a study on their main sewer lines was done in 2016.

NEDERLAND, Texas — It will be the largest project in Nederland's history.

Nederland plans to spend nearly $10 million on its sewer system. The project is intended to prevent sinkholes and keep sewer lines from collapsing.

After complaints from residents, Nederland City Manager Christopher Duque said in late 2016, the city began a study on their main sewer lines.

The study showed the pipes were old and not working like they should.

"We found several areas where there is major root into the lines, where we can see cracks in the lines," said Duque.

Duque said the project should prevent sinkholes and keep sewer lines from collapsing.

He said the existing sewer lines are collecting more than the intended wastewater, flooding the system with rainwater and other debris.

"We know a large part of that is a result of what we are seeing from the study where you can see it's very easy for rain water to find itself into the sewer system," said Duque.

The first phase of the project is expected to start next week.
