Some Nederland residents facing serious drainage issues following Thursday's rains

Neighbors say that the constant rain is making matters worse.

NEDERLAND, Texas — Heavy storms passed through Southeast Texas Thursday morning left residents living along Hill Terrace Dr. in Nederland with some serious drainage issues to deal with.

Neighbors say that the constant rain is making matters worse.

Homeowners Candi and James Knowles say that debris inside the culverts is making it hard for water to pass through, causing water to back up into their yard.

They had to move their two Mustangs to higher ground to prevent the cars from being flooded.

The ditches at the end of their driveway began to quickly fill with water, causing the yard to turn into what looked like a small pond.

Their home is on piers, but water had risen to the first step.

"I'm grateful that it didn't get into our house, but my concern right now is what we're facing with hurricane season coming up," said Candi Knowles.

"If we get more rain than what we got today, if a storm actually does come here, we had water literally coming up to our steps with the rain this morning. So if we get a hurricane then we're in bad shape," she said.

City workers came out to check the area, but did not clear the culverts, according to Candi Knowles.

Their neighborhood received between four and five inches of rain today.
