Experts explain how to safely stay warm at home as temperatures drop

As the community prepares for the cold weather, Captain Otis Brooks with Beaumont Fire Rescue wants to remind everyone about the importance of heating safety.

BEAUMONT, Texas — For Southeast Texans, carbon monoxide detectors, extension cords and space heaters are all important ahead of the arctic blast headed into the area late Tuesday night.

As the community prepares for the cold weather, Captain Otis Brooks with Beaumont Fire Rescue wants to remind everyone about the importance of heating safety.

"We've already seen a fire caused from an extension cord this year...don't pile things up on it. Don't run extension cords under the rug. Extension cords are not made to be used on a permanent basis is made to be used for temporary basis," said Brooks.

Generators can also be dangerous, along with the silent killer, carbon monoxide, if not used properly.

"Generators are designed to be used outside, please don't put them inside an enclosed garage. If you run it through the window, make sure you don't pinch it," Brooks said.

There are ways to ensure your family's safety with preventative measures, like investing in a pair of carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors. This could save your life.

"That's something that can give you a warning that something's wrong," said Brooks.

He also told 12News the symptoms of possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

"If you start to have headaches or you feel dizzy or have nausea, get out of the house and call 911," he said.

If you're still having issues with detectors, there is a resource available.

"They can call the fire department and if they need help with it, we don't mind coming out. But please don't call 911, call the non-emergency number," said Brooks.

Even in case of an emergency, make sure to do these steps to possibly reduce the amount of damage, and to help firefighters.

"Close the door, get everyone out of the house and make that phone call. Life safety is always our priority," Brooks said.
