Police identify 37-year-old Beaumont man fatally shot by officers Sunday morning

The two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Police have released the name of a 37-year-old Beaumont man who was fatally shot by police after leading them on a brief chase and then getting out of a pickup with a gun Sunday morning in Beaumont.

Jeremie Jamson Coleman, 37, of Beaumont, died Sunday morning after being shot by officers according to a Monday morning news release from the Beaumont Police Department. 

The two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated and the grand jury looks at the case police said. The officers being placed on administrative leave is standard in these cases.

At about 7:05 a.m., officers were called to an apartment at The Trace at North Major, located at 3875 North Major Dr due to a family violence assault call according to police.  A woman who he is not related to told dispatchers that Coleman was armed and had assaulted her.

When officers got there they saw Coleman speeding away in a silver GMC Sierra pickup according to police.

Following a brief chase, the truck crashed into a ditch on the frontage road near the RFD Rd underpass on the north side of U.S. Highway 69.

When Coleman got out of the truck, he brandished a gun and pointed it at officers before being fatally shot by them. No officers were injured.

Coleman was pronounced dead at the scene by a Jefferson County justice of the peace.

Previously Coleman served six years in prison for kidnapping and aggravated robbery. In April 2017 he was arrested for assault family violence in Jefferson County. In April 2003 Coleman was arrested for robbery and two counts of kidnapping. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years which ran concurrently.

Police have not released any other information at this time.
