Man charged in deadly 2018 Orange County shooting turns self in on Monday

Police said Karl Stanbrough is the person who called dispatchers and admitted to shooting Jason McLain.

VIDOR, Texas — Almost five years after a shooting claimed the life of a 47-year-old Vidor man, a suspect is in custody.

Karl Stanbrough Jr. is charged with murder in connection with the April 2018 death of Jason McLain. Stanbrough turned himself into the Orange County Sheriff's office on Monday, February 20, 2023.

Stanbrough was indicted on February 16, 2023 and is now being held in the Orange County Jail on a $1 million bond. 

Vidor Police are investigating the case.

McLain was killed on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. Vidor Police officers responded to the 100 block of Alamo Street after receiving a call about shots fired around 10:30 p.m. 

Police said Stanbrough is the person who called dispatchers and admitted to shooting McLain.

Stanbrough told dispatchers he had approached what he called a "disturbance in the roadway" when McClain charged at him, according to a Vidor Police Department release. Stanbrough was 21 when the shooting took place. 

Officers secured the area when they arrived on the scene. 

Acadian Ambulance medics declared McLain dead at the scene.

Police later learned McLain was arguing with a woman prior to the deadly shooting, according to the release.

Date: April 25, 2018, 4:30 P.M.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at approximately 10:32 P.M., officers of the Vidor Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Alamo in reference to a call of shots fired.  At this time, no arrest has been made.  This incident remains under investigation.  The deceased male has been identified as 47-year-old Vidor resident Jason McLain.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at approximately 10:32 P.M., officers of the Vidor Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Alamo in reference to a call of shots fired.  The caller stated he approached a disturbance in the roadway and a male charged at him.  The caller stated he shot the male.  Officers quickly arrived on-scene and secured the area.  The victim was declared deceased on scene by Acadian Ambulance Service medics. During the investigation, it was learned the victim was in an argument with a female.  The caller approached the two individuals and the victim charged at the caller.  A firearm was fired striking the victim.  The individual with the firearm is cooperating with investigators.  At this time, no arrest has been made.  This incident is still under investigation.
