Jefferson County Clerk candidate cleared of assault charges

BEAUMONT — A misdemeanor assault charge filed against a candidate for Jefferson County Clerk has been dismissed.

Bailey Wingate, who is running for Jefferson County Clerk against incumbent Carolyn Guidry in the November election, was accused in January 2018 of assault by a then 21-year-old woman who was a student at Lamar University.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's office had the charges dropped on Monday, May 21, 2018.

Wingate always professed his innocence to the charges which were the equivalent of a traffic ticket and could have cost him a $500 according to a release from his attorney Dustin Galmor.

Tom Kelly had been appointed as a special prosecutor to look into the charge.
