Three in custody after chase ends near Deweyville High School triggering a lockdown

The chase began in Calcasieu Parish.

DEWEYVILLE, Texas — A robbery suspect led Sulphur Police on a chase through western Calcasieu Parish and into Texas Thursday afternoon triggering a lockdown that has since been lifted at Deweyville High School after the chase ended near the campus.

"We want to make sure we do whatever we can to protect the kids," said Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll.

Vidor Police were notified that the chase was coming into Texas and set up spikes before the chase got close, according to Carroll.

"There were three robbery suspects in black Nissan Rogue, traveling at an excess of 100 miles per hour," Carroll said. "We then moved towards Highway 12 we were afraid that he would come back towards the school, fortunately for us he turned towards Louisiana again."

The driver left the interstate with police chasing behind at FM1442 and then ended up heading east on Texas Highway 12 never making it into Vidor Carroll said.

When the chase got near the intersection of Texas Highway 87 and Texas Highway 12 the car drove into a field and the driver bailed out and ran from police, 12News crew at the scene witnessed.

"They bailed out of the car up by the Deweyville school system at 87 and Highway 12. They went into the woods and law enforcement from Texas and Louisiana circled, and set up a perimeter, and they were able to capture them," said Carroll.

Police told 12News on the scene that three people are in custody. They will be in Newton County Jail tonight and will be taken back to Calcasieu Parish within the the next few days, according to Carroll.

A Newton County deputy alerted Newton Independent School District about the chase ending near the school and the district put it on lockdown.

The Deweyville High School campus, to the west, was then put on lockdown according to a school administrator.

The three suspects will be charged in Texas with evading in a motor vehicle, which is a felony. They are also possibly facing charges in Orange County for evading there as well.

"I don't think people realize the danger they create when they try to run from the police," Carroll said.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
