HOUSTON — For the second straight weekend, drones lit up the skies over NRG. Saturday night, the 200 lifted off in rodeo-related formations.
KHOU 11's Maria Aguilera got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a drone show like these.
"We're all from Texas so it's a lot of fun to be able to put something on that touches the hearts of so many Texans. It's such a new technology and it's so much imagery that they can really get behind and recognize," said Tyler Johnson, the director of operations at Sky Elements Dron Shows.
Johnson said what you see in person is only a fraction of what goes into a show.
"Just in the show alone, there's between 30 and 50 hours of animation time that our animation team has put into the show telling every drone exactly where to be and what time to be there and what color to be," he said.
The show lasts around 12 minutes from liftoff to when they land. Johnson said its still a new technology and that most people haven't seen a show like this in person.
"It was super cool," said drone show watcher Julianna Shelton. "I was standing there thinking about how people from a long time ago would probably be like, 'What in the world is this!' It's so futuristic."
