Port Arthur Architect introduces 'Floating House' concept after Harvey floods destroy many homes

If you lost your home to flooding waters after Harvey took on Southeast Texas, an interesting idea by a Port Arthur architect will make homes float.

"Through architecture, you always look for ideas to solve every day problems," says Alam Farias, who graduated from the University of Houston.

Thousands of people lost their homes to flood waters after Harvey, Farias says it's a problem he is looking to resolve.

"Right after Harvey, i started having ideas and started questioning why are we still building houses that sit on concrete," Farias says.

Farias tells 12News that the idea came in the wake of Hurricane Katrina after visiting New Orleans to find ways to make homes resistant to flooding.

"Water stays level therefore the house will lift up guided, when the water comes down, it's will come back to it's place," Farias explains.

He says it's just as comfortable as a regular home except you wont be affected by flooding waters.

"I think the concept is a selling point especially after the flooding we've had lately," says Ken Ortolon, who is associate architect at the studio.

The two are planning on one day building a prototype, hoping to spark a larger conversation, and maybe brainstorm a little more to making homes flood resistant.

"Lets start rethinking to rebuild in areas that are subject to flooding," Farias says.

It's rethinking in the wake of rebuilding, all in the hopes of reducing the tragic loss our area endured in recent years.

Farias says the foundation is made of blocks of Styrofoam sprayed with concrete, and says the floating house would cost about the same as a regular home.
