PORT NECHES, Texas — Residents of a Port Neches neighborhood looked on Sunday evening, as Nederland and Port Neches police rolled by in a "low-speed" chase down their usually quiet streets.
"They really weren't driving that fast, you know? And he was making turns, and they were making turns and they were just following him you know," said witness, Roy James.
James was enjoying his evening, and watching TV when he suddenly saw the chase enter his neighborhood.
"He made at least 3 passes by here. He'd go down, turn, and I see him crossing down here. You know, and here comes the cars," said James.
Port Neches Police say it all started with a traffic stop on the corner of Avenue B and Dallas Street at around 8 p.m.
"He resisted officers efforts to take him into custody and he initiated a pursuit with the officers. He just abruptly left the scene in his vehicle," said Port Neches Police Department Chief, Cheri Griffith.
Police say the driver, later identified as James Bruno, drove away with his door still open.
"(Bruno) lead officers on a low speed pursuit through the city," said Griffith.
Eventually the chase passed through Dallas Street.
"The kids are in the street playing you know, and there's people walking dogs, and anywhere you look there's a golf cart their right. So we were kind of worried about, you know the pedestrians," said resident Eric McCauley.
The police ultimately arrested Bruno several blocks over.
"They were able to keep it safe, and contained and, like I said, take the suspect into custody at the end of it," said Chief Griffith.
Bruno has been charged with evading arrest, but police say he may soon face other charges.
"He had a small amount of marijuana that he had thrown out of the vehicle during the pursuit," said Chief Griffith.
