'It's horrible': Family of Beaumont father who was shot, killed in 2015 renewing push for answers

Charles Bluitt was 27 years old when he was shot and killed outside of his home on Abilene Street in Beaumont’s North End.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A deadly 2015 shooting left a young girl without a father, and the family of a Beaumont man is renewing their push for justice as they seek closure.

Charles Bluitt was 27 years old when he was shot and killed outside of his home on Abilene Street in Beaumont’s North End.

“I remember that day clearly,” Gloria Bluitt, mother of Charles Bluitt, said.

The deadly shooting took place on January 15, 2015. Almost eight years later, the memory of that day is still raw for Gloria Bluitt.

“He collapsed right in front of me,” Gloria Bluitt said. “Can you imagine a mother standing over their child shaking, couldn't do nothing? It was just lifeless. It's horrible.”

Aaliyah Colbert is Charles Bluitt’s 11-year-old daughter. She was 3 years old when her father was killed and was left with only memories of happier times as she grew up without him.

“We was playing hide and go seek, and she called us by our full names, both of us," Colbert said. "We went to hide, and we were just laughing.”

Charles Bluitt’s family is holding tight to his memory. They want him to be remembered for his life and not his tragic death.

“He was definitely one of a kind,” Seanquala Smith, Charles Bluitt's bestfriend, said. “He was very playful. He was always smiling, always laughing. He had a very big heart.”

Sunday will mark eight years since Charles Bluitt was killed. His family met with Beaumont Police Tuesday morning for a renewed push for answers.

Police have been looking for Charles Bluitt's killer, but his family feels they are no closer to getting closure. The entire family wants to know why someone killed their loved one.

“I just wish someone would have a heart to say something," Gloria Bluitt said. "Lord have mercy on your soul because what you [did] was senseless. If you needed anything, he would have gave it to you."

While it appears the case has grown cold, the family is hopeful the right person will hear their message and come forward with information.

“I don't have closure," Gloria Bluitt said. "I still try and meet with people that's like me to kind of uplift them. I may not have closure, but I have the lord on my side.”

Beaumont Police said witnesses saw a man in his early 20s wearing a gray hoodie and silver metallic shorts running down Abilene the day of the shooting.

Police are still accepting tips on this case. Those who have information but would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 409-833-8477.

No detail is too small to report.
