Touch-a-Truck grows, draws crowd of families, kids 4th year in a row

Organizers said every year the event continues to grow. This year it was hosted at Hardin Jefferson High School.

SOUR LAKE, Texas — Children, parents and businesses across Southeast Texas came out to the annual ‘Touch a Truck’ event Saturday afternoon.

Companies brought their trucks, tires, boats and even helicopters to the family-fun event March 7.

“It’s a good event," Hardin County Fire Department Officer Brandon Lee said. "It’s probably one of the best ones that we have in the area."

Lee said he has been going to the event for the past four years, and every year the event continues to grow.

A Sour Lake Fire Department firefighter and a student at Hardin-Jefferson High School competed to see who could put on firefighter gear the fastest. To the surprise of the crowd, the student won.

Rebecca Gardiner, executive director of the Sour Lake Chamber of Commerce, said the population has outgrown last year’s venue.

“We’ve got over 40 participants from tractors, helicopter, fire trucks, police cars, bucket trucks. We even have the coast guard boat here,” she said.

The annual event is fun for children, but can be beneficial for adults as well.

“We want the community to have fun, we want the kids to explore the trucks, honk the horns and sit in the seats, but it’s also a great opportunity for our adults to come and explore new careers," Gardiner said. "Some of our participants are hiring,”

The Sour Lake Chamber of Commerce said the plans to have the event again next year.

"It’s to highlight all of our agriculture members and folks in the blue-collar field such as truck drivers, because these are the folks that help protect, build and serve Southeast Texas," she said.
