Wednesday afternoon Thunderstorms in Southeast Texas pack 50 mph winds, leave downed trees, power outages

The heavy wind caused a tree to fall on a home on Broadway while the homeowners were inside.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont saw winds gusting about 50 mph and torrential rainfall Wednesday evening as storms moved through the area. 

As of 9:10 p.m., about 5,400 people were without power in Jefferson County according to Entergy.

Hail also accompanied the system. The stormy weather caused a tree to fall on one home on Broadway near Phelan and Lucas Wednesday while the homeowners were inside.

Karen Clausen said she heard a loud noise when the tree came down on the house. 

"He told me to get down and he pushed me down and said stay down," Clausen said. 

She said the tree is coming through parts of the house, but no one was in the rooms where the tree fell. 

"I feel lucky, I'm still shaky," Clausen said.
