Tropical Storm Barry: Preparing your pet for a storm

Don't forget your plans when you make your preparation plans.

NEW ORLEANS — Time is winding down for folks in Tropical Storm Barry's path to evacuate to safety before the storm makes it projected landfall Saturday morning.

There are several things families can do to prepare before, including preparing their pets for travel.

Here's what you should do (information provided by ready.nola.gov.):

  • Have food and water for at least three days for each pet.
  • Have food and water bowls and a manual can opener.
  • Pack litter and litter boxes or newspaper. Also have paper towels, plastic trash bags, grooming items and household bleach available.
  • Gather pet medications and medical records and store them in waterproof containers.
  • Bring pet toys and your pet's bed if you can, to reduce stress.
  • Carry study leashes, harnesses and carriers to transport your pet safely and ensure they can't escape. Carriers should be large enough for your pet to turn around, lie down and stand comfortably.
  • Have current photos and descriptions of your pets in case you and your pet become separated.
  • Make a copy of feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior problems and the name and telephone number of your veterinarian in case you have to board your pets or place them in foster care.

Don't forget: It is illegal to tie up pets during a hurricane or a flood in Louisiana. If you your pet trapped in a dangerous situation, you could be fined.

There are options for pet owners evacuating with the city's assistance. Pet's can be taken with their owners at New Orleans' "evacuspots." Click here for more on that.
