Wreck claims life of Woodville man in south Orange County

A Honda car driven by 18-year-old Anthony Palomo of Woodville was headed west on FM 1006 when he lost control and the car skidded sideways

BEAUMONT, Texas — An 18-year-old Woodville man was killed in an early Tuesday morning wreck in South Orange County.

The major wreck, involving a car and an SUV, happened before at about 5:30 a.m. on FM 1006 according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A 2005 Honda passenger car driven by an 18-year-old, Anthony Palomo of Woodville, was headed west on FM 1006 when he lost control and the car skidded sideways, according to the release.

The Honda crossed into the eastbound lanes of FM1006 and was struck by a an east bound Ford SUV driven by Dane Yates, 47, of Port Arthur.

Palomo was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck by Orange County Precinct Four Justice of the Peace Rodney Price the release said. 

Yates was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont  with serious injuries the release said.

The road near its intersection with East Round Bunch Road was closed until just before 10:30 a.m. while DPS completed its wreck investigation.

The area was covered in thick fog at the time of the wreck although it is not known if the weather was a factor in the wreck.

The wreck happened near Lion Elastomers.

From a Texas DPS news release...

At approximately 5:30a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to a multiple vehicle crash on FM 1006 in Orange County.  The crash occurred approximately one (1) mile East of SH 87.

The preliminary DPS crash investigation indicates that a 2005 Honda passenger vehicle was traveling westbound on FM 1006.  A 2000 Ford SUV was traveling eastbound on FM 1006.  For an unknown reason, the driver of the Honda lost control of his vehicle causing the vehicle to go into a side-skid.  The vehicle crossed into the eastbound traffic lane and was struck by the Ford.

The driver of the Honda, an 18-year-old male from Woodville, was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Rodney Price at the scene. His name will not be released until the next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the Ford, 47-year-old Dane Yates of Port Arthur, was transported to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries.

All eastbound and westbound traffic lanes of FM 1006 will remain closed until the crash investigation is complete.  There are no time estimation as to when the roadway will reopen to traffic.  Motorists are urged to find an alternate travel route.

All information is preliminary as Troopers work to determine the exact factors that contributed to this fatal crash.
