Two injured, one in critical condition after jumping from bridge in attempt to avoid 18-wheeler

The 18-wheeler did not hit either vehicle.

ORANGE, Texas — Two people were injured after jumping off of an Orange County bridge following an incident early Tuesday morning.

City of Orange police and firefighters received several calls about a multi-vehicle wreck on the Adams Bayou bridge along Interstate 10 at about 2 a.m.

Officers learned two vehicles were traveling together on Interstate 10, when the drivers pulled over and got out to talk to each other. The two drivers saw an 18-wheeler quickly approaching them.

The two thought the 18-wheeler was going to hit them, so they jumped over the side of the overpass, not realizing how high it was. The 18-wheeler did not hit either vehicle.

One person was taken by ambulance in a unknown condition to a Beaumont hospital while the other was flown by helicopter in critical condition.

Both were taken by air ambulance to St. Elizabeth and were admitted to the hospital for their injuries.
