BEAUMONT, Texas — A student was taken to a Beaumont hospital after being hit by a car near Amelia Elementary School Tuesday.

Beaumont Independent School District Police Chief Joseph Malbrough told a 12News crew at the scene it happened around 4:15 p.m. A "male student" was hit by a car as he was crossing Major Drive to enter the parking lot of Northpoint Community Church.

"It was one of our students who was attempting to cross Major," Chief Malbrough said.

The student was taken to Christus St. Elizabeth in stable condition. Sgt. Thomas Swope told 12News the student was a 12-year-old boy who possibly suffered an injury to his lower leg.

"Paramedics did transport the student to the hospital," Chief Malbrough said. "He's stable at this time, but unfortunately, he still has to go through a medical evaluation to make sure everything else is clear with him."

The driver of the car stopped to see if the student was OK and gave their information to law enforcement following the accident, according to Chief Malbrough.

"They immediately stopped and turned into the parking lot to assess the situation and check on the student," Chief Malbrough said.

The Beaumont Police Department is investigating. Chief Malbrough feels it is possible the driver could face charges.

"It's an unfortunate situation that took place," Chief Malbrough said. "For the most part, our children are often cautious. As well as our motorists are pretty mindful that this is a school area, and you may have students who are crossing. Again, we encourage citizens who are travelling in a school zone, or in a school area, just to be more cautious. You may have students or young people who are crossing."
