Pedestrian struck, killed on Highway 87/73 in Port Arthur

The accident happened around 5:30 a.m.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A 40-year-old Groves man was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a car along Texas Highway 87/73 near Groves.

The man was struck while walking across the highway at about 5:30 a.m. a mile east of Port Arthur according to Jefferson County Precinct 7 Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett.

A 2008 Infinity driven by a 24-year-old driver from Orange was traveling westbound along Highway 87 south of the Rainbow bridge near where the highway becomes Texas 73 when it struck the man according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family as the accident is investigated according to the release.

An autopsy on the man has been ordered by Judge Burnett

No charges have been filed against the driver of the Infinity according to Burnett.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a report of an auto-pedestrian crash this morning on SH 87, about one mile east of Port Arthur.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates at approximately 5:20 a.m., a 2008 Infinity passenger car was traveling west when it struck a pedestrian in the roadway.

The driver of the Infinity is identified as a 24-year-old driver from Orange who was not injured as a result of the crash.

The identity of the pedestrian is not immediately available pending notification of next of kin.

This crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
