NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — One person was killed a fiery head-on collision in Newton County early Saturday morning.

The crash happened on TX 87 just north of the Bleakwood community about 2:45 a.m. Saturday, July 13, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Stephanie Davis said in a news release.

A 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck was going northbound on TX 87 and crossed the center line, hitting a 1996 Chevrolet sedan headed southbound, troopers said. Then the Chevrolet sedan caught fire and became engulfed in flames.

The driver of the pickup, 24-year-old Brycton Hughey of Kirbyville, was taken to Christus St. Elizabeth's hospital in Beaumont with serious injuries and remains in the hospital. The driver of the sedan was killed, Davis said.

Troopers have not yet determined why the truck veered into oncoming traffic, Davis said.

Justice of the Peace Connie Smith pronounced the driver of the Chevrolet sedan dead at the crash scene, Davis said.

"At this time, the deceased victim has not been identified due to the extent of the fire," Davis said.

The crash is still under investigation as Texas DPS troopers are working to identify the driver who died and determine what led to the accident.
