Jasper woman hit and killed by Hyundai on Highway 96 Friday evening, investigation underway

At this time, it is unknown what led to the deadly incident.

JASPER COUNTY, Texas — Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating after a woman was hit and killed by a Hyundai.

It happened Friday, February 24, 2023 on Highway 96 just south of Kirbyville. A 2015 Hyundai Tucson was driving northbound around 7:15 p.m. when it hit a woman in the roadway. 

The woman was later identified as Christina Rivas, 33, of Jasper, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety release.

Justice of the Peace Raymond Hopson pronounced Rivas dead at the scene. Those in the Hyundai were not injured. 

At this time, it is unknown what led to the deadly incident.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers are investigating an auto-pedestrian fatality crash on U.S. Highway 96 just south of Kirbyville.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates on Feb. 24, 2023, at approximately 7:15 p.m., a 2015 Hyundai Tucson was traveling northbound and struck a pedestrian in the roadway.

The pedestrian, Christina Rivas, 33, of Jasper, was pronounced deceased on the scene by Jasper County Justice of the Peace Raymond Hopson.

The occupants in the Hyundai were not injured.

This is an ongoing investigation, and there is no additional information available for release at this time.
