Twin City Highway reopened after major natural gas leak in Nederland shut it down

Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter said that workers were drilling a hole for a sign and punctured two high pressure gas pipelines.

NEDERLAND, Texas — The Twin City Highway in Nederland has reopened after a major natural gas leak shut down both sides of it. 

The highway was closed between Highway 366 and Helena Avenue for roughly two hours

According to first responders, the gas leak was in the area of a new gas station that is under construction. Nederland Police Chief Gary Porter told 12News that workers were drilling a hole for a sign and punctured two high pressure gas pipelines.

Porter said there was a high pressure gas leak venting high in the sky, so officials evacuated immediate area.

12News reached out to Nederland Independent School District officials concerning the status of Langham Elementary, which is blocks away. District officials said there is was concern for this campus or any other schools.

No injuries were reported.
