Fiery multi-vehicle wreck along U.S. 96 in Lumberton injures two, backs up traffic

Firefighters and police responded to the wreck just after 4:45 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 96 and West Walton Road.

LUMBERTON — A fiery multi-vehicle wreck in Lumberton has sent two people to the hospital and snarled afternoon traffic along U.S. Highway 96.

Firefighters and police responded to the wreck just after 4:45 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 96 and West Walton Road.

The wreck involved five vehicles and injured two people who were transported by ambulance to the hospital according to Lumberton Police Chief Danny Sullins

One of those was suffering from a serious injury but was conscious and alert according to Sullins.

An SUV was traveling southbound on U.S. 96 when it rear-ended a van stopped at a red light Sullins said.

The driver of the SUV is being cited for failure to control speed he said.

Sullins also said it appears drugs or alcohol were not involved.
