Bicyclist dies after being struck by 18-wheeler along Texas Highway 62 in Orange

City of Orange Police officers are investigating the incident that killed a 65-year-old man.

ORANGE, Texas — A 65-year-old bicyclist was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by an 18-wheeler along Texas 62.

Russell Jay Gibbs, 65, was struck just before 8:30 a.m. along Texas 62 just north of FM 1078 according to Captain Robert Enmon of the Orange Police Department.

Gibbs was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which is being investigated by detectives with the City of Orange Police Department according to a news release from the Orange Police Department.

A bicycle could be seen laying in the middle of the roadway not far from Gibbs' body.

Medics with Acadian Ambulance were dispatched to the scene and pronounced Gibbs dead the release said.

From a City of Orange Police Department news release...

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at about 08:29 a.m., Officers were dispatched to 4500 Hwy 62 N, Orange, Texas in reference to a traffic accident, involving an 18-wheeler and bicyclist. Upon arrival, patrol officers found a white male subject, who was later identified as Russell Jay Gibbs, 65 years of age. Acadian Ambulance arrived on scene and pronounced Gibbs deceased. Orange Police Department investigators were summoned to the scene. At this time this case is being investigated by the Orange Police Department Detective Division.
