BEAUMONT, Texas — After battling an illness just hours before the class 5A boys tennis singles state championship, Brandon Do overcame the odds and became Nederland's first state tennis champion.

After defeating Isaac Cordova of El Paso in two sets (6-1, 6-2) and Peyton Dooley of Highland Park in three sets (6-0, 6-7, 6-4), Do defeated Red Oak's Jared Wilson in two sets (6-1, 6-4) to secure the class 5A singles state championship.

Brandon's sister Megan also found success at state when she and Jayci Wong won third in the state doubles tournament for Nederland.

This state championship also marks the first as well for head coach Jorge Lopez, who after 29 years, can finally call himself a championship coach.
