McNeese takes doubleheader from Lamar softball

Cardinals and Cowgirls wrap up series tomorrow

Opening its final weekend in the regular season, the Lamar University Cardinals were swept in the Battle of the Border by McNeese. The Cards dropped game one, 8-2, before falling 3-2 in the seventh inning of game two.

Game One
In the top of the first inning, Kelly Meeuwsen picked up the first hit of the game with a double to center field. However, she would be left on second base after the next Cards hitter fouled out to third base.

In the bottom of first inning, Kaylee Lopez doubled to left center field. After a ground out and a runner on second, Aubree Turbeville singled to short moving Lopez to third. With runners on the corners, Turbeville faked a steal and Lopez stole home for the first run of the game.

The Cowgirls added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning. Lopez singled up the middle scoring one. With runners on the corners, Justyce McClain stole second base. Tuberville added to the lead with a squeeze bunt growing the lead to 3-0 over LU.

McNeese added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when they took advantage of three Cardinals errors. The Cowgirls added four runs in the frame and took a 7-0 lead over Lamar.

In the top of the fifth, Victoria Garivey picked up her second hit of the game with a double down the left field line. Mackenzie Futrell ran for Garivey and went to third on a single up the middle by Maddy Myers. On the play, Myers got thrown out trying to go to second. Elizabeth Castillo followed with a ground out for the second out of the inning.

With a runner on third and two outs, Savana Mata came up to the plate and singled up the middle which scored the first run of the game for LU. Following Mata's single, Shannon Klaus picked up an infield single. However, they would be left stranded and after four and a half innings, LU trailed 7-1.

LU continued chipping away at the McNeese lead. With one out, Jade Lewis hit a home run to left field. The home run was her third of the season and LU trailed 7-2. That would be all LU would get in the frame.

McNeese would add one more in the sixth inning taking an 8-2 lead. LU came up with its final at-bats and could not score a run and dropped game one, 8-2.

Garivey led the Cardinals at the plate as she had two of the eight hits for LU. Hitting her third home run of the season in the contest was Jade Lewis.

Game Two
The Cowgirls got things going in the bottom of the first inning. McClain led off with a single and moved to third with two stolen bases. She came into score on a groundout to third base putting the Cowgirls ahead, 1-0. Turbeville followed with a triple, however, she would be left stranded on third base.

Lamar looked to get the offense going in the top of the third inning. With one out, Mata drew a walk to get the Cards going. Shannon Klaus followed with a double, putting runners on second and third. Shaina Amir came up and hit a ground ball to third, the throw went home but the Cowgirls catcher could not catch the ball and two runs came into score putting LU ahead, 2-1.

The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs and a runner on second base, Lopez singled up the middle, which tied the game at 2-2.

Lamar looked to get the offense going in the sixth inning as Kimberly Mattox singled with one out. However, she would be left on first and the inning would be over. LU did not pick up a hit in the seventh inning.

The Cards got McNeese's first two hitters out in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Perrin singled to first. McClain followed with a single advancing Perrin to second base. Lopez ended the game with a single to center that scored Perrin, walking off the Cards, 3-2.

In game two, LU was limited to three hits, two of which belonged to Klaus. Mattox picked up the only other hit in the contest.

The Cards and Cowgirls close out the three-game series on Saturday, May 4 with a single game. The Cards and Cowgirls square off at 1 p.m. from Joe Miller Field.
