BEAUMONT, Texas —

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University will play 12 games in 2019 highlighted by six home dates, including two in the non-conference portion of the schedule announced LU Director of Athletics Marco Born Tuesday afternoon. It will be the Cardinals’ first regular-season 12-game schedule since the 2014 campaign when the Red and White posted an 8-4 record (the last time LU recorded an above .500 record prior to 2018).

“We are very excited about the 2019 schedule,” said LU head coach Mike Schultz. “It will be a very challenging schedule that should prepare us for the rigors of Southland Conference play. In addition, this schedule provides six home dates for our fans to come enjoy the day at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

“I know I speak for our coaches and players when I say we’re excited to hit the field for the start of spring camp. We’re all looking forward to preparing for the 2019 season,” added Schultz.

Fresh off their first appearance in the NCAA FCS Playoffs, the Cardinals will kick off the new season Saturday, Aug. 31st with back-to-back home games. The season-opener will be against Bethel University, followed by Mississippi Valley State the following week. The first two teams on the 2019 schedule will be first-time opponents for the Cardinals.

The third week of the season will see the Cardinals travel to College Station to take on Texas A&M. It will be the program’s second trip to Kyle Field and its first since the 2014 season.

The Cardinals will open Southland Conference play Saturday, Sept. 21 at Southeastern Louisiana. Following the game in Hammond, LU will spend the next two weeks in Beaumont taking on Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian. The game against SFA on Sept. 28th will serve as Homecoming week for the Cardinals.

Following the game against the Wildcats, Big Red will open arguably the toughest stretch of any team in the conference. The Cardinals will be in Huntsville Saturday, Oct. 12th to face Sam Houston State. The game against the Bearkats will kick off a stretch that will see LU on the road for four of the next five. The six-week stretch will see the Cardinals travel to Sam Houston State, Incarnate Word, Northwestern State and Houston Baptist with the lone reprieve coming Nov. 2 when LU hosts Central Arkansas.

The Cardinals close out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 23rd, with the annual rivalry with McNeese in Beaumont. The FCS playoffs will begin the following week.

The Cardinals will enter the 2019 campaign looking for back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 1966 and 1967 seasons. All home games will be played at Provost Umphrey Stadium. Game times for the 2019 season have not yet been set.

Tickets for the 2019 campaign are available through the LU Ticket Office at (409) 880-1715, or in person located in the Montagne Center.
