Newton receives State Championship rings

An emotional Coach Johnston reflects on his time with the Eagles

NEWTON, Texas — For the second straight year Newton celebrated a football State Championship. Today players and coaches received their championship rings in front of a packed house in the Newton High School Auditorium.

While there was plenty of excitement in the air, it was also very emotional with WT Johnston on hand. Monday marked Coach Johnston's last day leading the Eagles after deciding to retire due to health reasons.

Following the ceremony he reflected on his time in Newton. "When I walk on the field on Friday night, I still smell the grass, I still hear the same sounds I did 30 years ago. And I'm going to miss that more than anything. That's my refuge. Between those white lines on Friday nights. I can't never wait to get there. And that's what I'm gonna miss."
