Newton chooses Drew Johnston as new AD/Head Football Coach

Son of retired WT Johnston to take over Eagle football program

Newton ISD didn't have to look far to find a replacement for the retired WT Johnston, with son Drew being named as the Eagles next Athletic Director and Head Football Coach.

Drew, a Newton graduate, is promoted after serving most recently as the Eagles defensive coordinator.

Johnston has been employed by the school district for the last eight years. In that time the Eagles have made three State Championship appearances, winning titles the last two seasons. During that period he has also served as an assistant coach in basketball and softball.

In an official release from the district they write, "Newton ISD is proud to have a former Newton High School graduate as the NISD Athletic Director and Head Coach."

Johnston was thrilled for the opportunity. "You know it was a bittersweet deal. It wasn't a normal situation. There hasn't been a lot of head coaches here. You know I think I'm the fourth one to be hired in the last 50-60 years. So that's a big deal. Somebody said, well that's big shoes to fill, I'd hate to be the guy to have to do it, but you know I'm glad it's me."
