'I’m there to push him': Beaumont United's basketball coach credits wife's support for his coaching success

Through 23 years of marriage Coach David Green and his wife Alicia have led three basketball teams to win State Championships.

BEAUMONT, Texas — When the Beaumont United High School basketball team plays, fans can normally see Coach David Green's luck charm, his wife Alicia Green.

Coach Green has collected three championship rings throughout his years of coaching but his most important one he wears on his left ring finger.

“I know we talk about the movie Love and Basketball," Coach Green said. "Well I think about that often, because when I think of Love and Basketball, I think about us, but not so much of what the movie says. It’s so much of the fact that we love basketball. We love each other. We love people. We love the community and because of basketball, it has opened up the world to us.”

The two met when they both worked at Kountze High School. Eventually, their friendship turned into a relationship.

“When the time came, God was in the midst," Coach Green said. "I just really believe that he knew if we connected as one, we were gonna do great things together. Well once she sat down there with us, it was just like having another coach.”

Alicia Green plays an important role on the Timberwolves' basketball team. She keeps Coach Green accountable especially after a loss.

“Later on he said, 'Who does that? Who tells me after I lose a game that it was my fault," Alicia Green said. "But it was me because, you know what, I’m there to push him. I don’t always tell him what he wants to hear and he says that’s one of the things he loves about me.”

From school to school, Alicia Green has followed and supported Coach Green in his career. It's something Coach Green does not take for granted, so he hopes their relationship sets an example for the kids they interact with.

"He hopes that that will instill in them that when they get a young lady, that they will treat them right," Alicia Green said. "Or when the young’s ladies get ready to look for a husband, they’ll look for a husband that’s gonna treat them right and not dog them out. Because sometimes in this world they think that that’s all that they can get but that’s not true. You just have to be patient, wait on the Lord and there is somebody out there for you.”

Some would say Alicia and David Green are the duo that fosters champions through love.
