Benson's cleared of charges

Former Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson will not face charges over his two alcohol-related arrests in the Austin area.

Former Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson will not face charges over his two alcohol-related arrests in the Austin area.

Defense attorney Sam Bassett says two Travis County grand juries today declined to indict Benson.

Bassett told The Associated Press that the former NFL player is "elated."

Bassett says the grand jury reviewed the charges of boating while intoxicated, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated, then decided there was no probable cause in the cases.

Bassett says the panel heard from law officers and the former University of Texas star.

Benson on May 3rd was stopped while on Lake Travis and charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

He was pulled over in downtown Austin on June 7th and arrested on a drunken driving charge.

The Bears cut Benson after the second arrest.

Bassett, in a statement, says Benson is eager to have an opportunity to again demonstrate that he's a quality running back who can contribute to a winning team.
