Beaumont native returns home to coach at Lamar

Ron Antoine will serve as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for Big Red

BEAUMONT, Texas — Ron Antoine is back home.

"The homecoming has been really good," Antoine said. "There are a lot of places and a lot of things that helped me get the opportunity to play football, go to college and go coach all over the country."

After graduating from West Brook in 1992, Antoine went on to play college football at Colorado State where he helped the Rams win two conference titles. After that, he had two choices, either continue playing ball at the next level or make the transition into coaching.

"My coach in college said you're going to be a great coach and you need to coach with us," Antoine said. "So I stayed for another year at CSU, got a teaching certificate and started coaching at Colorado State."

From there, Antoine coached in North Carolina, Ohio, Arkansas and South Alabama before landing at Fresno State, where he had a hand in developing future NFL pro bowler, Davante Adams.

"I told every scout I could that the kid is just scratching," Antoine said. "He's had a chip on his shoulder ever since a lot of people passed."

Antoine would later spend four seasons at Texas State before coming to Lamar where he'll look to help establish a winning culture.

"The one thing we want to do is go out there and raise the expectation," Antoine said. "We have to start with the conference title and that's our goal. If you can win the conference, you can win the national title."
