Current Hardin County District Attorney David Sheffield and his challenger Thomas Roebuck are fighting for your vote to be the head attorney in Hardin County.

The heated election shows no signs of slowing down.

“My opponent is not doing his job and I can do a better job,” Roebuck said.

“My opponent doesn’t have a record to run on but what he has to do is attack mine,” Sheffield said.

Sheffield said he has developed a reputation of cracking down hard on violent criminals. Roebuck said that is not the case.

The challenger claims criminals are coming into Hardin County from other parts of Southeast Texas because he believes the county has a reputation of being soft on criminals.

“Sexual predators, child molesters, repeat offenders, family violence felons go to the penitentiary,” Roebuck said. “That’s what’s going to happen under my rule.”

Sheffield said having gotten the maximum punishment for six out of the last eight cases he has tried, he’s doing his part in keeping Hardin County safe.

“That's my number 1 priority and job,” the incumbent said. “That's what happens when you take these cases to trial when you get big sentences and big verdicts. It deters others from coming up here and trying to do those crimes.”

Roebuck actually supported his opponent in 2008 but now said Sheffield’s weak relationship with law enforcement is leaving the county vulnerable for more crimes.

“He promised me when he ran he would make changes,” Roebuck said. “Had hasn't done it. The only reason I've taken an aggressive stance is because it's time for the folks of Hardin County to have better than they have now.”

“Campaigns are always kind of rough and tough but it comes with the territory of being a political and public figure,” Sheffield said. “I don't like the tone of it but I try and keep it as positive as possible. My opponent doesn't have s record to run on but what he has to do is attack mine.”

Election Day is March 1.
